AN AFTERNOON SKIING THE GLADES AT JAY PEAK
I worked today, and usually after work I head to Whiteface to ski, as it’s my home mountain, but I’m blacked out there this week due to it being a holiday period. As such, I had to look elsewhere for some afternoon turns. I had three options: Jay Peak, Smuggler’s Notch or Sugarbush. I’m going to be at Sugarbush this coming weekend, and while Smuggler’s Notch sounded fun, I haven’t been to Jay peak in a few weeks, so I decided to head there. What a great choice!

Kitz Woods.
Hell’s Woods.
I got to the mountain between 1:30-1:45. All of their lifts spin until 4, so I was able to get more than two hours in on the snow, all of which was spent skiing Jay’s legendary trees. It may be a holiday period, but the mountain was pretty quiet. I mainly stuck to the Stateside base area, so I’m not sure what Tramside looked like, but there were no lines for the lifts on Stateside.
Low visibility on Upper Goat Run.
Canyonland.
Show-off Glade.
Though I was there for a short time, I checked out a number of glades and they all skied fantastic. It was relatively mild, with temperatures around or above freezing, so the snow was soft and forgiving, without being super spring-y. I was worried it might be a little sticky, but that was not the case. Coverage is still excellent everywhere, especially in the trees, and the base is nice and deep. We don’t know what the weather has in store, of course, but I think this could be another year where there’s trees in play deep in to April at Jay.
Kitz Woods.
Buckaroo Bonzai.
Stateside Glade.
I enjoyed all of the glades I skied today, but some that stood out were Kitz Woods, Buckaroo Bonzai, and the Stateside Glade. Kitz Woods was in great shape and it was super quiet in there. This one starts off fairly steep and tight and then opens up a bit further down. Interestingly, I mostly associate this one with late season skiing, because it tends to stay open for a pretty long time. Buckaroo Bonzai is an easier glade that was great to cruise through today. The bumps in there were small and soft. Stateside Glade was in a similar state to Buckaroo Bonzai, and I actually lapped it a couple of times at the very end of the day. It’s another one that’s fun to cruise through.
