DOES JAY PEAK STILL HAVE THE SNOW?

Over the last couple of days, we’ve started to dip our toes in to spring-like weather here in the East. Temperatures have started to go above freezing, even at higher elevations, and we’ve seen a little snow melt. Despite the warmer temperatures, and lack of big snows recently, I’m happy to report that Jay Peak still has a great base, including in the trees.

Timbuktu.

Timbuktu.

Normally, I ski after work at Whiteface during the week, but Timbuktu was calling me at Jay, and I had to answer that call. It was another beautiful afternoon, with comfortable temperatures and sunshine. The snow wasn’t very spring-y anywhere on the mountain today, at least from what I skied. Rather, it was more of a packed powder, with some firm spots on the groomers here and there.

The view from the Bonaventure Quad.

Buckaroo Bonzai.

The mountain had all but one run open, and all of the lifts were spinning. Despite that, I only skied off the Jet Triple and Bonaventure Quad, as that’s the area I parked at. I’ve said it many times, but it’s always worth repeating: I’m not some amazing glade skier. I just like to ski trees. Anyways, when I go to Jay, that is all I do. I ski trees. The groomers are literally a means to an end. The snowpack in the trees is still nice and deep. There’s basically nothing in the way of stuff poking through, even in the trees down low. You’ve still got all the options in the world to make a turn in the woods.

Canyonland.

Stateside Glade.

Show-Off Glade.

I checked out a fair amount of glades. My day started with Timbuktu and ended with the Stateside Glade. In between that, I skied Hell’s Woods, Canyonland, Bonaventure Glade, Show-Off Glade, Expo Glade and Buckaroo Bonzai. Some of those I visited twice. Snow conditions in all of the glades were pretty similar. It’s kind of hard to explain. The snow was packed powder, but fast. It wasn’t fast as in super icy, it was just fast. My favorite glades today were probably Buckaroo Bonzai and Stateside Glade. I had both all to myself, and the little bumps in them were nice and manageable.
