SKIING MASHED POTATOES AT JAY PEAK IN MAY

Yesterday was a rainy day at Jay Peak and while today started off soggy, by the time I got there the rain had moved on and it was just cloudy. The sun even tried to make an appearance a few times in the afternoon, which is something that’s been missing on the weekends this spring. It was mild and I found myself thinking I probably could’ve just worn shorts instead of ski pants!

I got to the mountain at 11 AM and skied until about 2 PM. Conditions wise, today was very similar to yesterday. They were spinning the Bonaventure Quad and the Jet Triple with access to eleven trails, all of which were groomers. There were no marked glades officially open. The snow was mostly soft and mashed potatoes everywhere, though there were firm spots to be found and some of the open runs had narrow sections and large bare patches. In areas of heavy traffic, you could find some bumps to play in.

One thing I forgot to mention yesterday was that there was no skiable connection between the Bonaventure Quad and the Jet Triple. You could ski from the top of the Jet Triple to the Bonaventure Quad, but you could not ski from the Bonaventure Quad to the Jet Triple. It was the same way today. If you wanted to switch from the Bonaventure Quad to the Jet Triple you were walking, which means most people stuck to one lift or the other. I did the walk a couple of times and while it wasn’t too bad, nobody really wants to pop the skis off and walk to a lift. I highly doubt the Bonaventure Quad spins next weekend so I think this is likely a non-issue going forward.

Today was the last day of daily operations at Jay Peak this ski season, but the season likely isn’t over yet for Jay. Obviously, the weather this week will have the final say, but I think they’ve got enough snow on Jet to spin that lift at least one more day next weekend if they want to. Whether Jay opens or not, my ski season will continue on as I’ve still got four days left on my Ikon Pass at Killington this season. I don’t know if I’ll use all of those days, but I’ll definitely be making a trip down there before the season ends!
