COLD DAY SKIING GLADES IN VERMONT

Today I really wasn’t sure where I was going to ski, as I had to work early this morning. I don’t normally work weekends, but I worked both mornings this Saturday and Sunday. I contemplated not going skiing today at all, in fact, in order to give myself some time to rest, but in the end I decided to head to Jay Peak.

Looking up at the summit of Jay Peak.

Expo Glade.

Upper Milk Run.

It was a fun day in the woods at Jay, albeit a little cold. Temperatures at the base were in the low single digits and, of course, it was even colder up high. I get pretty warm when I'm skiing trees, so it never really bothers me, except on the lifts. The mountain was empty and you could ski right onto all the lifts. The only lift not spinning was the Flyer Quad. I’m not sure why it wasn’t spinning, but this lift can be a really cold ride and it’s extremely prone to wind holds, so it could’ve been either of those things or something else.

Canyonland.

Show-Off Glade.

As I’ve said before, I really only ski trees when I go to Jay. I use the groomers to get to the trees, and then to the base. Today was no exception. I spent my time almost entirely in the woods. Just a reminder — I’m definitely not some amazing tree skier, I just like skiing the woods. With the Flyer Quad closed, I mainly hung around the glades off the Bonaventure Quad and the Jet Triple.

Expo Glade.

Timbuktu.

My first glade run of the day was the Expo Glade. There was a ton of wind-blown powder at the top of this glade. It was deep. From there, I headed to the Jet, and spent most of my time lapping that lift. Timbuktu was phenomenal, as always. This is one of my favorites at Jay. There are some tighter spots up high, and then it opens up. Good stuff.

Upper U.N.

Unnamed trees between Jet and Upper U.N.

Stateside Glade.

I skied the unnamed woods between the runs Jet and Upper U.N., and I think this is another area prone to wind-blown powder, because the powder there was pretty deep. The spacing of these trees is awesome. It wasn’t my first time skiing them, but it’s not an area I find myself in often. I also hit the Stateside Glade, Hell’s Woods and several other glades. All skied great, and coverage was excellent.
