SKIING IN NORTHERN VERMONT IN LATE APRIL

Day 119 of my ski season saw me head to northern Vermont for some turns on the groomers at Jay Peak. It was a beautiful day with plenty of sunshine, and comfortable temperatures. I probably could’ve got away with shorts today, but it was a little chilly up high so I stuck with my ski pants. I did, however, ditch the gloves.

The Jet.

Montrealer.

Lower Goat Run.

You may remember from my post this past Tuesday that Jay Peak did in fact make snow earlier this week, and as a result that kept some terrain in play this weekend that might not’ve been otherwise. In total, they had 21 runs open and all lifts, but the carpet, were spinning. That’s pretty good for April 25! With it being late April, and the mountain not being busy, I considered riding the tram, but the one time I looked there was a line. Go figure.

Upper Goat Run.

As I mentioned at the start, this was a groomer day for me at Jay and that’s because the trees are pretty much done. While none of them were technically open today, there were some areas that you could jump in for a short time. I will say that from the top Kitz Woods actually looked pretty decent still, but it was closed and I was on skis that I care about so I didn’t venture in.

Angel’s Wiggle.

Middle Northway.

Green Mountain Boys.

Conditions wise the snow was soft everywhere today and mashed/bumped up. The secondary surface was a little firm in spots, particularly on the Jet, which was interesting. Coverage varied a lot from trail to trail, but The Jet, Montrealer, Middle Northway, Angel’s Wiggle, Green Mountain Boys, Lower Goat Run, and probably some other runs that I’m forgetting were all in decent to good shape. The Jet, which is typically the last trail standing, has plenty of snow on it, though there are a few thin spots at the very top. My run of the day was Green Mountain Boys. Coverage was good and it was covered in soft bumps.

Tomorrow is looking like another great April ski day with warm temperatures and plenty of sun. I may head to Sugarbush or Killington in the morning, but we will see. Jay was a lot of fun today and it’s possible I may just head back there. It’ll be a game time decision!
