SKIING SNIRT AT JAY PEAK ON CLOSING WEEKEND (25-26)
The base of the Jet Triple.
Between the sun, warm temperatures, SNIRT, and vibes, today was a fun mid-May ski day at Jay Peak. This weekend is closing weekend, and I’m planning to ski at Killington tomorrow, which means today was actually my last day of the season at Jay. I’m sad to say goodbye to another mountain for the season, but a new winter will be here before we know it.

This year was epic at Jay Peak right from the get-go. My first day at Jay was on Thanksgiving weekend, and that was basically a mid-winter ski day with glades in play. Including today, I skied at Jay Peak 21 days this winter. My Jay pass also works at Ragged Mountain, and I went there once, so I skied on this pass a total of 22 times this season.

Getting of the Jet Triple.
I got to the mountain in the morning, about an hour after first chair. Like last weekend, it was just the Jet Triple spinning, providing access to The Jet. There was no line for the lift, which was nice. Occasionally, there’d be a lot of people on the trail, but this was usually just near the top. It was a warm day with temperatures probably in the 60s, and plenty of sun. I was wearing shorts, and an atheltic shirt. To hold my RFID card, and my keys, I had on mittens.

Bare patch on The Jet.
Coverage varied on The Jet. The top has basically entirely melted out, and while some people were skiing the SMUD down to the main base of snow, most people, myself included, were walking it. Once you reached the main base of snow, coverage was pretty good. There were some large bare patches here and there, but they were avoidable. Meanwhile, the bottom of the run had a full on SNIRT section that was skiable. This area deteriorated quickly, and part of it eventually developed in to a SMUD patch.

The snow was incredibly soft and bumpy everywhere. With every turn, you’d throw around a bunch of snow. It was really fun skiing. Even the SNIRT/SMUD patch down low, which I usually have problems with, was a good time. Normally, I’m worried that the SNIRT/SMUD will be a little too dry and bring me down. That wasn’t the case today. There was a lot of water draining through that area, presumably from melting snow, and every time I skied it I was able to cruise right through.
With all that said, that’s a wrap for me at Jay Peak for the 2025-2026 ski season. I’ll be spending all summer thinking about powder days in glades like Timbuktu and Andre’s Paradise. Those are some of my favorite days of the ski season.
