SNOWY MAY SKI DAY AT JAY PEAK

To be honest, ‘snowy’ may be doing a lot of work in the title. It was really just intermittent flurries, but we will take what we can get on May 3! Nevertheless, May has got off to a cool start. Yesterday was a chilly ski day at Jay Peak and so was today. Both days saw me wearing my full winter kit, which is unusual in May.

I got to the mountain shortly after open. It was a little busier than it was yesterday, but overall it was pretty empty. The terrain and lift plan was the same as yesterday with sevens run open, served by the Jet Triple, Taxi Quad, Metro Quad and the Flyer Quad. Today was the last day of operations for all but the Jet Triple, which will spin next weekend.

The only lappable runs without walking were The Jet off the Jet Triple, Interstate off the Metro Quad, and there may have been a lappable run off the Taxi Quad, but I didn’t check. The only route open off the Flyer was Northway to Angel’s Wiggle, which meant if you rode the Flyer you’d end up at Stateside, and have to take the Taxi Quad to Queen’s Highway if you wanted to go back to Tramside.

Conditions were basically the same as yesterday. The snow was soft and mushed up everywhere. On all but The Jet, there were narrow areas and thin patches of snirt to contend with, as well as some areas of good coverage. The Jet was is in great shape, except at the very top, which was narrow and thin. My guess is walking will be required next weekend from the top of The Jet to the snow.

Aside from Camelback Resort in Pennsylvania, which will be open on Tuesday for Cinco De Mayo, there will be no ski areas open in the East this week until next Friday, which means today was the last day for daily operations this season in the East. Sadly, ski season is in its final days, but we still have a couple of weekends to go! I’m planning to ski at Jay next weekend, and maybe Killington too. I’ve still got three days to use there, so I’m thinking I’ll use one each of the next three weekends.
