THIS SKI HILL HAS 150 FT. OF VERTICAL

For the last ski day of February, I took my talents to Beartown Ski Area near Plattsburgh, New York. I’d intended to ski in Vermont today, but I was dealing with a migraine this morning, and almost didn’t go skiing at all. Late in the morning, I decided I’d rather at least go to Beartown, as I may not be able to ski there again this season until next winter, based on my schedule in March.

Looking up at the ski area from the lodge.

For those not familiar, Beartown is a nonprofit hill with 150 ft. of vertical. It’s got a Poma lift, a T-Bar, a handful of downhill ski trails and a couple miles of cross-country ski trails. The place has a ton of charm, and offers a very old-school experience. If you’re up in northern New York, I'd definitely recommend checking it out.

The weather today was nice with sunshine and temperatures in the 40s, which is the warmest it’s been in a long time. It’s funny how in the fall, temperatures in the 40s can feel a little chilly, but after a cold stretch of winter, it feels like a heat wave. I had all of the vents open on my jacket and pants, which kept me nice and comfortable. Otherwise, I may have been hot!

They had the T-Bar spinning this afternoon, and there wasn't much in the way of a crowd. The snow in the shaded areas was pretty good, but anything exposed to the sun was on the sticky side. It wasn’t so sticky that you struggled through it, but you could feel it every now and then grabbing at your skis.
