CLOSING WEEKEND AT WHITEFACE (2025-2026)

The base of the mountain.

Well folks, the time has finally come. Whiteface is calling it a season after this weekend. You may recall that I skied there last Saturday and I wasn’t sure if it was my last day there or not, as they weren’t sure if they’d be open another weekend or not at the time. On Sunday, they announced they’d be closed from Monday to Thursday, but they’d re-open Friday and Saturday for two more days of skiing, conditions permitting. Fortunately, conditions did permit, and I was able to get in one final afternoon of skiing at my home mountain.

After a week full of warm temperatures, and lots of rain, the skies finally cleared out today and there was plenty of sunshine. It was very warm this afternoon, so I decided to skip the ski pants and wear shorts. That was a great decision. To hold my wallet, keys, and my phone, I wore my ski jacket, and it was definitely too warm for that. I should’ve prepared better. Shorts, a t-shirt, and a light jacket for my things would’ve been a winning combo.

They had 26 runs open, which were accessed by the Warhorse Lift, the Little Whiteface Double, the Gondola and the Summit Quad. I was especially glad to see the Little Whiteface Double spinning, as it was a great day to ride that lift. You couldn’t really lap the mid-station, as it was closed due to the snow conditions around the base of it, which were pretty rough.

With the rain and warm temperatures this week, the snowpack took a massive hit, and there were large bare spots to be found on basically every open run. That said, there’s still a lot of snow in some places, including on the lower part of Upper Skyward, Upper and Lower Thruway, Brookside, Bear and Ausable Run.

Lower Mackenzie.

On top of the bare spots, there were some runs that had a nasty rocky spot or two that were mandatory to cross. For instance, high up on Upper Skyward there was a thin spot, in between two bare spots, with some rock and small trees poking through. On Lower Skyward, there was a very thin spot that was a mine field of rocks, while Niagara was down to a narrow strip along the edge, and it was rocky in spots as well. Needless to say, if you’re skiing tomorrow you’re going to want to be on skis that you don’t care about. This is a textbook rock ski weekend!

Lower Thruway.

The snow today was very soft everywhere, and the skiing was a ton of fun. Some trails were mashed up more than others, depending on elevation and traffic. My favorite run of the day was Lower Thruway. It hadn’t been skied much so I was able to get fresh tracks through the snow, and it was like I was skiing through butter. It was awesome!

With all that said, that’s a wrap for me on Whiteface reports for this season. This was probably the best ski season I’ve experienced there so far. Not only did Mother Nature provide ample snow, but the snowmaking team did a great job, the grooming was top notch, and the lifts rarely had problems. Thank you to everyone at the mountain for a fantastic season!
