FAST AND FIRM DAY IN THE WOODS AT JAY PEAK

With the weather over the last few days, today was not an ideal day to head to Jay Peak to ski trees. Thursday was warm, it rained Thursday night, and then Friday was cold, as was this weekend. That combination always yields fast and firm conditions, unless there’s some significant snow, which there wasn’t. Despite knowing that the woods would be fast and firm, I decided to head up there anyways, because April is nearly here, and tree days are now fleeting. Even with a little ice in the mix, it was a fun time as usual!

The mountain wasn’t too busy and lift lines were short to non-existent. All of the lifts were spinning, and all but three runs were open. The base is still good to great everywhere, though that will probably start to change soon. We’ve got warmer weather coming this week, along with some rain, and April is knocking on the door. The reality is the snowpack is going to start dwindling soon. That said, some of the glades can hang on for a long time at Jay so there will probably be tree skiing for weeks to come.

As mentioned, conditions were fast and firm. I don’t ski groomers at Jay really, except to get to the glades, and then to the base, but what I did ski was fine. The mountain picked up a little snow post the Friday freeze, and though it wasn’t much, it was enough to get the groomers in decent shape. Even Upper Goat Run, which is usually terrible, was in okay shape today, at least when I skied it.

As for the trees, that little bit of snow made them skiable, and that’s all that matters. You were able to dig in to the snow enough to have a good time, and I did. None of the glades particularly stand out today, as conditions were pretty much the same everywhere, but I spent time in favorites such as Timbuktu and Andre’s Paradise, so I guess I’d rank them among the best of the day. Probably the best thing about today was how quiet the trees were. Very few people were venturing in, and it felt like I had them to myself. It’s hard to complain about that.
