FINDING SOMEONE’S SKI THAT’D BEEN LOST FOR 4 MONTHS
On my last run today at Whiteface, I did something I rarely do and headed down the trail Upper Switchback, off Upper Skyward. As I neared the bend of the Switchback I stopped for a second to take a break, and that’s when something caught my eye: A ski sitting on top of a snowmaking pipe under some trees. Naturally, I decided to investigate.
Where I found the ski on Upper Switchback.
The post on social media from early March about a ski that’d been missing since December.
Not too far from this area was the run Cloudspin, and as I got close to the ski I remembered a social media post from back in early March about how someone lost a ski in December on Cloudspin. They were hoping someone would find it this spring as the snow melted. I grabbed the ski, and headed to the base. I’d imagine I looked pretty odd skiing down the mountain by myself holding a single ski.

Once I got to the base I opened up social media and searched for the post to make sure it was the right ski. Sure enough, it was. After four long months, and probably against all odds, this ski is set to be reunited with its owner. If the ski could talk, I’d bet it’d have some crazy stories about how it survived this legendary winter at 4,000+ ft. elevation.

That is the most exciting thing that happened this afternoon, but the skiing was good too. When I got to the mountain there were intermittent flurries up high and that continued all afternoon. Down low it was above freezing, though it never really rained or sprinkled. The mountain was pretty empty, but there were definitely more people there than yesterday, when I had the place to myself.

Yesterday, the top layer of snow was a little soft, and the secondary surface was firmer. Today, the top layer was much softer everywhere, but especially from around mid-mountain to the base, with some of those runs being pretty sloppy. Overall, the variable conditions made for some really fun skiing. My favorite run of the day was Thruway in full. The snow on it was really nice and soft.
