IT WAS ONE OF THOSE DAYS AT JAY PEAK…

Jay Peak may be the most wind-prone ski area in the East, and today it flexed that muscle. None of the upper mountain lifts spun due to wind. Unfortunately, I didn’t see the notice that all of those lifts were down until I pulled in to the parking lot. So is life. Nevertheless, I turned snow to powder and made the most of my day.

Wind hold signs at the ticket counter. I’m a season pass holder, but I walked by the booth and saw them.

Riding the Metro Quad.

Skiing in shorts yesterday.

I didn’t actually have to do anything to turn the snow to powder, because Mother Nature took care of that for me. Yesterday, I skied at Sugarbush in shorts. Today, I skied at Jay Peak with heavy snow coming down. Welcome to spring in the north woods! It was cold enough for the snow to accumulate, and several inches fell throughout the day.

Lower Can Am.

The Boulevard.

With all the upper mountains lifts down, that left just the Taxi Quad and the Metro Quad as the main lifts open. Both of these are beginner lifts. They were also spinning the Village Double, which is a lift that’s open to the public, but it mainly provides access to condos, etc. I don’t know how many runs were officially open, but there were two or three ways down from each lift.

Queen’s Highway.

Interstate.

Harmony Lane.

Given the wind issues, the mountain was basically empty. I didn’t have to wait to ride either the Taxi Quad or the Metro Quad. The snow conditions were decent I thought, given that the mountain was actively experiencing a freeze following yesterday’s warmth. The fresh snow really helped keeps things from getting slick. The secondary surface was firm in spots, though. On the open terrain, coverage was overall good. Some runs were worse than others, such as Harmony Lane, which got pretty narrow towards the end.

Enjoying the finer things in life.

Given the limited terrain situation, I decided today would be the day I indulged in the finer things in life. Yes, I had me some ski resort chicken tenders. I don’t eat at ski resorts very often, so I believe this may have actually been my first time getting chicken tenders at a resort this season. The chicken tenders (and fries) were good, but I’ve had better at other mountains in the past.

Notice posted to their snow report at 11:12 AM this morning about snowmaking tonight and tomorrow.

With today’s snow, tomorrow looks like it could be a great day at Jay. That said, they’re only planning to spin the Jet Triple tomorrow, as they’re going to be making snow on the mountain tonight and tomorrow. Yes, you read that right. They’re going to make snow on April 19th and 20th. Love it.

Never Quit Skiing,
