LAPPING THE T-BAR AT A SMALL ADIRONDACK SKI HILL

We had a decent wind storm come through northern New York this past weekend, and it caused some damage to my roof. The roof was fixed early this afternoon, but as a result, I was unable to ski at Whiteface after work like normal during the week. Fortunately, Mount Pisgah in Saranac Lake, New York, was able to save the day.

For those unfamiliar with Mount Pisgah, this ski area is owned and operated by the community. They’ve got a T-Bar servicing 329 ft. of vertical, with about 15 acres of terrain. The mountain opened at 3 PM today and that’s when I got there. It was empty at first, but it got a little more busy as the evening went on.

It was mild with temperatures in the 30s. No face mask was required today. The snow conditions were fantastic. I was a bit surprised, because we had a warm up this past weekend, followed by a freeze, and typically it takes a decent amount of snow to recover from that. Everywhere that was groomed was packed powder, and with me getting there early, I was able to enjoy plenty of fresh corduroy. The trail Buttermilk was partially groomed, with a large part of it left covered in a couple inches of powder, and that was fun to ski through.

Race course on White Stag.

Initially, I wasn’t going to ski any runs through the forest, as I was worried about coverage, but I saw a couple of people go in, so I figured why not. I ended up skiing the run Back Trail and the coverage was good, as was the snow quality. No complaints from me. My run of the day was probably White Stag. This run has a couple of steep pitches and it skied really well with the conditions today.
