SKIING TREES AT WHITEFACE
With some snow in the air, I headed to Whiteface after work today to spend a little time in the trees. The glades close at 2:30, so it really was a little time, but nevertheless I was able to get in to a couple of glades. After that, I hit some groomers to wrap up the day.
Low visibility up high.
Victoria.
As mentioned, there was snow in the air. I’d say the mountain had received an inch or two by the time I left, which really helped freshen up the groomers, especially the steeper ones, which were firm yesterday. It wasn’t a particularly cold day with temperatures in the 20s. Visibility was low up high, but it was fine below 3,500 ft. elevation.
Upper Northway.
10th Mountain Division Glades.
I started my afternoon off with a trip down Upper Northway, before heading in to the 10th Mountain Division Glades. I skied Upper Northway on the right side and it was much better than it was yesterday, when it was very firm. There was a lot of wind blown powder on the right side to play in. The snow in 10th Mountain was nice and soft, and coverage was still pretty good in there.
Lower Skyward.
The Wilmington Trail.
After that run, I skied Lower Skyward via Yellow Dot off the gondola, before making my way to The Wilmington Trail off the Lookout Mountain lift, where I’d go on to ski the Deer Valley Glades. Lower Skyward was in great shape, especially compared to yesterday. That inch or two of snow really helped! The Wilmington Trail was also in good shape, though I did find that the fresh snow was starting to become a little grabby towards the middle of the run.
Deer Valley Glades.
Deer Valley Glades.
Hoot Owl Glades.
As I got to the sign for the Deer Valley Glades, which is off The Wilmington Trail, I decided to hop in and see how it was, and it was okay. The glade itself was fun, with some pretty wide open trees, but there was a little too much poking through the snow down near the bottom for my own personal liking. After Deer Valley, I ended up in the Bear Den Learning Center area, so I took a trip through the Hoot Owl Glades. Coverage in Hoot Owl was great, and I cruised right through it. I know it’s an easy glade, but it’s pretty fun.
Mountain Run.
Lower Parkway.
After that, my time was up, and I was back to skiing groomers. With the fresh snow, the left side of Mountain Run was a ton of fun today. This area always seems to collect wind blown snow. Another fun run was Parkway in full, and then Ausable Run after. The lower part of Parkway and Ausable Run were both mostly untouched, so they were covered in an inch or two of fresh powder.
