TERRAIN JUST KEEPS OPENING AT WHITEFACE!
After a two-day break, I was back on skis today at Whiteface Mountain. I skied at Mount Pisgah last Friday and Sugarbush on Saturday, so this was actually my first time at Whiteface since last Thursday. With even more terrain having opened up over the weekend, the mountain’s trail count grew quite a bit during my short time away.
A funny sticker on the Summit Quad.
With my toe still bothering me from this past Saturday at Sugarbush, I took it easy this afternoon, but I still managed to ski most of the open terrain. They had six lifts spinning, providing access to around 64 runs. I don’t remember exactly how many runs they had open last Thursday, but I think it was in the low 50s. Over the weekend, a lot of great terrain opened up, including Mountain Run, Upper Thruway, Upper Parkway and Draper’s Drop.
Mountain Run.
Looking up Mountain Run.
I started my afternoon with a trip up the gondola to ski Approach and Mountain Run. Mountain Run is a black diamond that was used during the 1980 games. It can be slick down the middle, but you can basically always find some nice snow along the edges, and that was the case today. It was nice to be back on this run. It’s one of my favorites at Whiteface.

After skiing back to the gondola, I headed back up the mountain and then down to the Summit Quad, by way of Essex and Victoria. Essex was really nice on the sides and I skied it several times. The snow on the left side of Victoria was fantastic and it may have been my favorite run of the day as a result. Up at the summit, I found Paron’s Run and The Follies to have some pretty slick areas. It didn’t help that the skis I was on haven’t been sharpened in a while, but regardless, both were a one and done for me.
Beautiful East Coast ice in all its glory.
Excelsior.
Danny’s Bridge and Brookside.
Elsewhere on the mountain, you could find slick spots here and there alongside the packed powder. Some trails, like Excelsior, had whales on them and they were actively making snow in a lot of places, including Excelsior, Lower Northway and Boreen, as well as several other trails. I found the snow coming out of the snow guns to be sticky in some spots, and with my toe bothering me, I was extra cautious anywhere it was being made.
