WINTER’S BACK AT WHITEFACE MOUNTAIN (AGAIN)

After Monday’s warm temperatures, which were followed by yesterday’s big freeze, and very windy conditions, I was a little worried about how Whiteface would be today, but it ended up being pretty nice. I skied there after work, which is something I haven’t done in nearly two weeks. I did ski there last Thursday, but I was off all last week, so that was a full ski day. Anyways, it was nice to return to my usual scheduled time of 1-4.

The mountain wasn’t busy today, and the weather was pretty nice. Temperatures were in the 20s or colder, and the sun was out. There wasn’t much in the way of wind, and, as a result, it was pretty comfortable. There was even a time or two where I felt warm.

They had 69 (nice) runs open today out of a possible 96. I’d imagine some of the closed terrain could re-open as groomers work their magic, or new snow/warm temperatures softens the snow up on them, but there’s also likely some trails that are closed due to coverage issues. It’s hard to say for sure, though, regarding specific trails.

Upper Mackenzie.

Lower Mackenzie.

Victoria.

Despite the weather this week, I thought the snow was good. It was fast and firm. There were more icy spots than normal, but aside from that, I was ripping around the mountain like a typical winter day. Thanks to the groomers, and whatever snow they received after the warm temperatures, you could hold an edge most everywhere.

Mountain Run.

Upper Skyward.

Lower Thruway.

My favorite runs of the day were probably Mountain Run and Lower Valley. The snow on the sides of Mountain Run was really nice, and there weren't many people on it. Lower Valley, surprisingly, was really nice to cruise down, especially the final hill. My least favorite run today was probably Upper Skyward and the lower half of Lower Skyward. Both were fine, I just thought the snow was better elsewhere. Upper Skyward had a few more firm spots than elsewhere on the mountain, to me at least, and the bottom half of Lower Skyward was in the shade when I skied it so it was a little more firm.
