A STUNNING AFTERNOON SKIING AT WHITEFACE

The view of Whiteface from the access road.

Today was my first Monday of the ski season. During the week, I ski after work at Whiteface and can get several hours of turns in. I met up with Wild Bill, who was chasing 40,000 ft. of vertical for the day. Wild Bill was on his trusty steed Armada, and skied the mountain like he was chasing after a train to rob. For this early in the season, it was an unbelievable display of sheer athleticism, but I digress.

I got to the mountain later than usual and fortunately, according to Wild Bill, it was about the time the clouds cleared and you could actually see the mountain. My last few ski days have all been pretty cloudy, so it was really nice to actually be able to see something. The views at the top of Little Whiteface and the summit were stunning as usual, especially as the sun set. I know most don’t like it getting dark early, but it’s really beautiful to ski down a mountain during golden hour.

The snow was pretty good, too. Across the mountain, it was a mix of packed powder and some firm spots here and there. The edges had plenty of snow to play in. They were spinning the gondola and the Summit Quad, which, combined, provided access to a total of 14 runs. Of the group, I found the snow on Paron’s Run to be the best. It was a dream to ski. I also really enjoyed the left edge of Essex, which is the only black diamond terrain open on the mountain right now.

There were no snow guns on today, but some of the trails they’ve been working on lately look like they’re ready to go. Victoria, for instance, is covered in whales. The upcoming holiday weekend is shaping up to be a great one for the mountain with a healthy offering of terrain.

Today was also my fourth ski day in a row and I was really feeling it there at the end. It’s still very early in the season and my legs just aren’t quite there yet. I’m looking forward to when that’s no longer an issue, in December. It’s very freeing to be able to ski whenever you want, for however long you want, without your muscles becoming fatigued.

By the way, Wild Bill reached 40,000 ft. of vertical on our last run of the day.
