DAY 70 OF MY SKI SEASON
It seems like just yesterday I was saying it was day 50 of my ski season, and now here we are at day 70. Sadly, ski season feels like it’s flying by, but the goods news is there’s still a ton of skiing left to go. Some would even argue that the best part of the ski season —spring— is still to come.

For day 70 of my ski season, I headed to Whiteface for some after work turns. It was a really nice day for day 70, with plenty of sunshine and comfortable temperatures. The views were great today, and the snow was fantastic in most areas thanks to the several inches of snow that fell overnight, plus the snow that fell yesterday and the day before.

Hoyt’s High has finally been groomed and it was open. It was open for a day or two last week, but it was covered in whales, and I was skiing over in New Hampshire and Maine at the time, so this was my first time getting on it this season. This run is located off the Lookout Mountain Triple. It’s a long black diamond and it’s one of the best runs at Whiteface, so it was great to be back on it. I skied it in the afternoon, and I found most of the run to be pretty firm, though the edges did have a ton of powder to play in.

Upper Mackenzie.
Other steep runs on the mountain were in similar shape. For instance, Upper Skyward was pretty wind swept and firm right down the middle, but the left side was full of deep wind blown powder. I also heard that the right side was in similar shape. Niagara was basically all windswept, and you really had to hold the edge for it to be enjoyable. Upper Mackenzie’s entrance was full of powder, but the cliff area, about halfway down, was very windswept and firm, but the sides had the snow.
I could keep listing runs, but I think you probably get the idea. Everything skied great, though, even the firm areas, because you knew you had a pocket of deep powder coming up to help out, and in some cases your whole run was going to be through deep wind blown powder on the side. Outside of the steeper runs, there was powder and packed powder everywhere, and that all skied great. Overall, it was a great afternoon on the mountain.
