EARLY DECEMBER POWDER DAY AT WHITEFACE

At long last, there was finally a powder day for me at Whiteface this season. That’s not to say it hasn’t snowed while I’ve been there, because it has, it just hasn’t come together like it did today, with snow in the air and several inches of fresh, light and fluffy snow on the ground. Needless to say, it was a pretty great day at the Face.

Paron’s Run.

Last Monday, I hurt my toe. I re-aggravated it this past Saturday while skiing at Jay Peak. I then skied Sunday at Whiteface, but I could only muster up a couple of runs. The swelling in my toe was too much. As a result, I decided to take yesterday off. I was pretty worried about how it would feel this afternoon, but with the swelling mostly gone, I was able to get in a few decent runs. However, I could feel some pain pretty much the entire time, especially on my very last run. I took a fair amount of breaks on each run, though, and that helped a lot. For those wondering, I did get the toe checked and it’s not broken.

Easy Street.

Upper Boreen.

Anyways, I arrived at the mountain after work, at about 1 pm. There was still snow coming down when I got there and it stayed that way for the remainder of the afternoon. They were spinning four lifts, which provided access to 26 runs, some of which opened for the first time this season this week, including Easy Street and Upper Boreen.

Every run was powder or packed powder so conditions were fantastic. Since I got there in the afternoon, you could find a few firm spots here and there where traffic had been heavy and scraped the snow off, but nothing really notable. As far as Whiteface goes, today is the best day I’ve had there this season, in terms of conditions.

Victoria.

Boreen.

Riding the Summit Quad.

Excelsior.

There are still whales and moguls on Victoria. I found the moguls to be pretty soft thanks to the fresh snow and that made it really fun to ski, just as it was the other day. They had snow guns running in a lot of places, including Essex, Approach, Upper Northway, Lower Valley, Fox, Deer and Bear. As the afternoon progressed, they also turned the guns back on Excelsior. The snow coming out of the guns on Excelsior was sticking to my goggles and I was worried it may be sticky to ski through, so once they came on, I stuck to Victoria and Lower Northway through that area of the mountain.

It’s worth mentioning that today was my 10th day of the ski season. There have already been some truly epic moments and there are many more to come. I can’t wait! We’re just getting started.

Never Quit Skiing,

Lincoln
