RIPPING GROOMERS AT WHITEFACE

After a week off skiing around Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, it was back to life as usual today. I worked, and then after work, I headed to Whiteface for some afternoon turns. It's been some time since I last skied at Whiteface, so it was nice to be back at my home mountain. I know it well, and when you know a mountain well, you can really maximize your time there.

While the day started off rather cold, by the time I got to Whiteface it really wasn’t too bad. The sun was out and that helped a lot. Aside from the Freeway Lift, all of the lifts were spinning, providing access to 80 runs. There wasn’t much in the way of a crowd, and I never waited for a lift.

Essex.

Victoria.

Upper Mackenzie.

The Follies.

Conditions were pretty good most everywhere. It was definitely a fun day to be ripping groomers. As always, there was a firm spot here and there, especially in wind prone areas. Two runs that were particularly slick were The Follies and Upper Mackenzie. The cliff area, in particular, on Upper Mackenzie, was very slick. Upper Skyward was closed, but you could access Lower Skyward via Yellow Dot. It was covered in little cookies, but it skied well and was pretty fun.

There are still some large whales on runs including Hoyt’s High, which wasn’t open, Paron’s Run and Lower Mackenzie. Some of the terrain was closed for racing, which was no surprise as the mountain is still hosting a major racing event. Closed runs included Upper and Lower Thruway, Upper Parkway, and Draper’s Drop.

Moose.

Deer.

I’m not sure what my run of the day was. Like I said, it was a fun day to be ripping groomers, and I actually really enjoyed cruising through the lower mountain today. For instance, I skied Deer, which is under the Warhorse Lift. I never ski this run. It was fantastic, with plenty of corduroy still on it despite it being late in the day. You know what? I’m going to go with Deer. Deer was my run of the day. That may be the first time someone has ever said that.
